“As a Hispanic 37-year-old woman who is a bit on the heavy side, being able to test my risk for diabetes in the privacy of my own home is very beneficial. Being a working woman it was convenient not to have to make a doctor’s appointment plus a separate lab appointment to find out my risk level.

On Saturday May 16, 2009, I followed the easy directions from the Choice Diabetes Risk in Home Test Kit.   All needed items are included in the test kit. You must fast for 8 hours prior to the test, so I took the test first thing in the morning. Easy since I did it in my own home, frankly still in my PJ’s.

I followed the clear instructions which include pictures in case you are not sure what you need to do.

When I drew the blood and put 2-3 drops of it on the test strip, I was amazed at how quickly the results appeared. Having used at home tests before to detect the pregnancies of my 2 sons, I know that at-home tests are very useful in giving one a “heads up” on medical things.  The test showed that I was at the high side of  ‘medium risk’. This was a signal to me that I should take better care of myself. I plan to trade my morning Danish or bagel in for a healthier breakfast and to walk 3 times a week during my lunch hour. Then I’m going take this test again, in about 3 months to see if these steps are helping, If my test results get better, maybe it will motivate me to do more healthy things. If my results have not changed I’ll probably go to the doctor rather than wait for my annual physical.
